The psytrance archive of Aotearoa.

A country of five million people at the end of the world built an outdoor party culture that, for six years, put the southern hemisphere's defining dance festival on a limestone plateau in Golden Bay. This is the documented part of that history — every fact with the source beside it, and the gaps admitted where no source exists.

The name is not decoration. Cyberculture opened in 1993 in basement premises at 151 Karangahape Road, Auckland — records, art, a studio, video rental, and the first shop in New Zealand to offer free internet access. This archive is named after it.

1989/90Unity at the Auckland railway station, about 2,500 people — the start of the documented Auckland lineage
1992Entrain, New Year's Eve at Stardust Bowl on Takaka Hill, about 600 people
1993Cyberculture opens at 151 Karangahape Road: records, art, studio, and free internet access
19961 January: three of the Entrain crew talk about a new party on the drive home. That conversation became The Gathering
1996/97The first Gathering at Canaan Downs, Golden Bay — about 4,000 people, a $90,000 budget, and a goa trance stage
2002The Gathering ends in liquidation after six editions
2004Kiwiburn is born inside the Visionz festival, and becomes its own event the following year
2011A local collective buys the Canaan Downs land and runs it as a cooperative. Luminate happens there
2021The Drug and Substance Checking Legislation Act makes festival substance testing permanently legal from 7 December

THE STANDARD

Nothing here is guessed.

Every historical claim on this site carries the source it came from, what kind of source it is, and the date we read it. Where the evidence does not exist, the page says so instead of filling the hole — who first played goa trance in New Zealand, for instance, is documented nowhere we could find, and we say that out loud rather than inventing a name.

When we get something wrong, the fix is published with the old wording, the new wording, why it changed and the sources. That log is public and it is not editable after the fact.
